Film viewing and discussion panel focusing on LGBTI community in Russia

What can the international community do to respond to the frightening situation for LGBTI people, particularly gay men, out in Chechnya? With the FIFA Men’s World Cup 2018 due to take place in Russia, should this be an opportunity to influence the human rights agenda? How can we use major sports events to change attitudes, policies and law?

Leading up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, a law banning the “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations to minors” – which could potentially be enforced against any LGBT person if they “flaunted” their status – was enacted in Russia. Human rights activists and LGBT people involved in the Games contemplated what to do about the situation. To Russia with Love documents their responses and reactions, speaking to a variety of contributors, including current and former Olympians and local LGBT campaigners.

Following the screening of the film there will be a short panel discussion looking at these key issues. Panellists to be announced.

This film is showing as part of Festival Fortnight 2017. This event is FREE to attend. There will be an opportunity to buy refreshments in the cafe, and there will be an opportunity to make a donation to the Russian LGBT Sports Federation as part of the event.
