Introduction to Swordfighting
Room 1007, Abertay University, Dundee, DD1 1HG
The Renaissance Martial Arts Society offers an exciting chance to learn how to swordfight like historical knights. Whether you are interested in the academic context of the weapons, the martial arts training, or just having fun and getting to hit your friends with swords then RMAS can give you the unique opportunity to try it out.
The Historical European Martial Arts community is a diverse and ever-evolving circle of like-minded people who truly enjoy the lively sport and friendly atmosphere of learning to fight with historical weapons. Inclusivity is a big part of RMAS’s mission, providing a space to train free of the aggressive stigma of some other martial arts while actively fostering a community with diversity at its core. Classes can be as low impact or high-octane as each individual is comfortable with while we all learn something exciting together.
The classes at this year’s Festival Fortnight will cover an introductory lesson in longsword, learning the basics of the weapon and the techniques of historical masters from the 1400s, followed by a crash course in the use of a multitude of other historical weapons. You will get the chance to use a variety of training weapons and practise in a series of solo and partner drills. Any relevant equipment and safety gear will be provided.
Please come prepared for light physical activity and dressed accordingly.
